RALEIGH, N.C.—(SNS)—With football deposed from No. 1 spot after a successful season at Shaw University, the Shaw Bears turned their attention to answering Coach Lytle's call for basketball material last week and with twenty men reporting began their preparations for a winning campaign.
Among the veterans are Vincent Ibb, guard; Randolph Brook, forward; Chris Howard, guard; Marshall, forward; Julie Hodges, guard; George Marshall, guard; and John Christian, guard.
Of the new men Donald Garner and Hollis Creecy have been most impressive while William Bunch, Van Skipper and Ivan Tucker are making determined bids for places on the team.
Girls Report
The Shaw University gymnasium resembled a hive of humming bees last Tuesday as approximately two dozen chattering co-eds reported for Coach Lenoir Cook's initial basketball practice of the season.
Apparently encouraged by the team's success in last season's campaign when they won co-championship state honors with Bennett college the Bearettes have returned en masse and brought with them several promising prospects among whom the most outstanding appear to be Mertie Rice, a speedy little forward from Garyburg and Maude Gaddy of Wadesboro. Mildred Moore who did not enter competition last year are making determined bids for a forward position.
Having heard rumors of possible championship trophy wars member of the squad appears to be trying to hang on the squad and is making it tough for the coach to whittle down to eleven.
Shaw co-eds shall fall.
