Full Text

As inter-State war is in progress in Central America. Costa Rica and Nicaragua are at it, hammer and tongs, each State with nearly one hundred men in the field, and two four pounder cannon. A draft for forty new troops is pending in Costa Rica; but the serious results that promise to follow the placing of so many men in the field has caused such alarm in both States, that an armistice with a view to negotiations is talked of. The people of Nicaragua in a fit of military ardour responded to a levy of one hundred and eight dollars. This money has been expended, and the authorities fear that a call for seventy dollars more, which is much needed, will provoke open rebellion. For a war that imperils life and costs money, the Central Americans have no appetite.
