11 Negro Prisoners Escape After Throwing Can Of Lye Into Eyes Of Their Guard

Raleigh, March 14 (AP)- Eleven Negro prisoners escaped from the State Prison camp at Stokesdale, in Guilford county, late yesterday afternoon when one of the convicts threw the contents of a box of lye into the eyes of a guard and blinded him, it was announced at Central Prison here today.

The prison here had not been given full details of the affair today, but officials were informed that a guard whose name was not reported was preparing to lock the prisoners in their quarters last night when a convict tossed the full can of lye in the guard's face as he marched by.
