BODIES OF DROWNED
Search for the bodies of Julius Mims and Mrs. Helen Lewis, both colored, drowned Friday night off Gravina island when their skiff overturned, was given up late yesterday afternoon by coast guard men and others following an 18-hour vigil.
It is believed the two bodies, which were sent to the bottom when Mrs. Lewis stood up and overturned the skiff, have been carried away by the tide. However, further search will be made tomorrow, it was announced.
The accident occurred when "Sandy" Irwin, a white man, was rowing the couple from the beach to his gasboat, anchored out in the bay. Miss Jesse Sleet and Miss Stella Hilson, colored, had already been conveyed safely from the shore to the gasboat.
The tragedy occurred as they looked on from the boat, their subsequent screams for help bringing assistance.-(Ketchikan Chronicle).
