From the Boston Times.

THE PEOPLE AND THE PRESIDENT.

In looking over our exchanges we observe that many independent presses have come to the conclusion to support President Tyler, as a candidate for the next Presidential term, and have placed his name at the head of their papers, avowing him as their candidate, 'subject only to the decision of the American people.' This movement has called forth not only the ire but the scorn of party men, and we have heard ultraists of both parties declare that even were the American people in favor of President Tyler, they could not re-elect him. The whigs, they say, have denounced him and the democrats have taken up with other candidates, and a 'no party' man cannot stand against the organized efforts of powerful parties. They say that President Tyler stands between two fires, and that political annihilation must be the result. Now it is very apparent that politicians have underrated the power of the people, and it is easy to show, in a few words, with what facility the people can, if really in favor of President Tyler, secure his re-election.

To the people, nothing is impossible—'there's no such word as fail.' In an armed revolution, the power of the American people triumphed over the force and arms of a mighty nation, pouring its military hirelings over the country, and over tories and traitors that infested the land, and it remains to be seen whether they cannot carry through with equal success a bloodless revolution at the ballot-boxes. If the people—disgusted with the knavery and folly of party leaders, resolve to re-elect a President whose ever-watchful care of their interest has stood the test of every trial, their course is plain and easy. They will hold mass conventions in the different states, and choose tried and trusty men to act as delegates to a great National Convention. From this moment the organization of a People's Party is a simple matter. The people will then have representatives to carry out their will, and not to neglect, despise and plunder them at once. The host of hirelings and traitors who have battened so long on the plunder of the public—who have reaped a harvest from the woes of the country—factious, demagogues and public cut-purses, will be swept away by the tide of popular indignation, and a new era—that of the union of principle and practice, of devotion to public interest, and diligence in the performance of duty, will commence and illumine a new page in our historical annals.
