S/Sgt. Marcus Love, Jr.
15th AAF in Italy—Staff Sergeant Marcus Love, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Love, of Durant, was recently awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in Aerial Combat at this heavy bombardment base where he serves as a gunner on a B-24 Liberator.
He is flying missions throughout Czechoslovakia, Northern Italy, Austria and Southern Germany.
He flew his first mission when 15th AAF Liberators bombed the airdrome at Bucharest, Roumania.
His veteran organization, one of the oldest in the Mediterranean theater, initiated its combat operations on August 1, 1942, blasting the port of Mersa Matruh, Egypt, then used as a supply base for Rommel's Afrika Korps. It then moved ahead with every major allied advance, participating in the Egyptian, Libyan, Tunisian, Sicilian and Italian campaigns. It now takes part in the devastating attacks on Hitler's Europe.
This group has won two Presidential citations: for the outstanding air support rendered the British 8th Army from August 1, 1942, till the axis capitulation in North Africa and Sicily, and for the participation in the historic low-level Liberator attack on the Ploesti Oil Fields on August 1, 1943. Each member of this organization is authorized to wear the distinguished unit badge with one cluster.
Sgt. Love is a graduate of Durant High School and attended the University of Mississippi. He entered the service in December, 1942 and received his technical training at the Lowry Field, Colorado, Armament and Maintenance School and the Laredo, Texas, Gunnery School.
