The following extract of a letter addressed to the Cleveland Herald gives a concise view of the law lately passed by the Canadian Provincial Legislature for the regulation of duties on American wheat and flour.
The act of our Legislature in levying duties on American produce, only relates to wheat and flour—the former, when manufactured in Canada, goes home as Canadian produce—the latter cannot: the duty is only to be paid when imported into the province for our own consumption. American flour passing through the St. Lawrence, pays no duty until it arrives in the ports of Britain. The duty to be levied on American wheat, is 3s. Sterling, the quarter, of 8 lbs. to the Imperial bushel. Flour, 2s. Sterling. per barrel. The Imperial quarter of eight bushels, is nine bushels and 29 lbs. standard weight of this country.
