Bear Snorts At Sammy Nelson

Sammy Nelson, son of guide Oscar Nelson and one of Kodiak's fishing champions, has the bear story of this week.

Like last week's bear-bitten Barmore, Sammy was out rabbit-hunting, but unlike Mr. Barmore, he got his rabbits and he wasn't bitten, only scared.

Hunting over on Monashka Lake on Armistice Day, with a friend, Sammy and the other boy came face to face with the bruin and her cubs.

The bear started to snort and spit, and the other boy ran away, but Sammy moved out of the bear's path, picked out a likely tree, hung onto his rabbits, and stood perfectly still.

The bear finally turned and walked off.

It was fortunate for Sammy that she did, for like Barmore, Sammy only had a .22 rifle with one clip of bullets left in it.

Nelson estimated the bear at about 7 or 8 feet. He says he's going to take a heavier gun and go out after her pretty soon.
