Full Text

Within these few years the philanthropick soul has received a series of the most acceptable of sacrifices, in the offerings made at the shrine of long injured humanity, of the power of the bloody Inquisition--the barbarous Monk, and the misanthropick Despot, whose actions have stained the history of ages with human blood. At last, but better late than never, the King of Sweden, by an edict published in February, has prohibited the use of the torture in his dominions, as being inimical to justice, and the interests of humanity. Thus another link in the chain of Gothick tyranny is broken--nor is it expected the other parts will long remain.--The annihilation of the Bastile will perhaps be the next sacrifice--Our allies, liberal in politicks, will be liberal in police--and that enlightened kingdom, which has given birth to so many Philosophers, Statesmen and Heroes, cannot long permit the existence of an institution so repugnant to liberality, and every principle of benevolence.

Key Arguments

Philanthropy Receives Sacrifices Against Inhuman Institutions Like The Inquisition And Despotism. King Of Sweden's February Edict Prohibits Torture As Inimical To Justice And Humanity. This Breaks A Link In The Chain Of Gothic Tyranny, With More Reforms Expected. Anticipates The Annihilation Of The Bastille As The Next Sacrifice To Humanity. France, Enlightened By Philosophers And Statesmen, Cannot Long Tolerate Such Repugnant Institutions.
