Summer Camp Session Ends For Troop 202

Eight hardy scouts attended Camp Herbert Hoover, situated near Big Meadows Lodge off Skyline Drive, the first week of July. These scouts were supervised by Howard Hunt. Pat Hunt was the junior assistant leader. A three-day burro trip highlighted the week's rugged camping session. Camp Herbert Hoover is the attractive former mountain retreat of ex-President Herbert Hoover.

Camp Rock Enon at Gore, Virginia, fourteen miles west of Winchester, was chosen for the Troop's second camping session. Twenty-four scouts and two leaders, Mack L. Walden. Scoutmaster. and Theodore Dalbow, attended the first week. Leaders for the second week were Lars Bronstein and Earle Knickelbein.

Lance Walden, senior patrol leader, qualified for Life Scout while at Camp Rock Enon, having achieved his merit badge for first aid. Lance is the only scout of Troop 202 to pass Life in many years of the Troop's existence. The Life rating was achieved five days before his fourteenth birthday Lance now has a total of twelve merit badges, and is striving for nine required badges for Eagle Scout before the new year.

During the first week at Camp Rock Enon, Troop 202 scored high honors on the Junior Leadership Training Program. Of 187 boys, 18 were eligible and chose to take the course. Nine passed this program, six of the nine from Troop 202. The six scouts were Chester Confer, David Dalbow, Johnny Haggerty, Robert Hoffman, John McCarthy and Lance Walden. The following scouts passed the program during the second week: Gary Bronstein, Billy Edwards, Carl Knickelbein and Terry Murray.

Merit badges earned during this two-week camping session were awarded to: Billy Edwards, 3; Johnny Haggerty, 2; Robert Hoffman, 2; Carl Knickelbein, 2: Allen LaFlamme, 3; John McCarthy, 4; Lance Walden, 2: In addition, Mitchell Bukzin advanced to 2d Class Scout rating.
