There will be no lack of good live reading matter to fill in the long winter evenings on the farms or in the villages of Wisconsin this winter if one may judge by the activities of the Traveling Library Department of the Wisconsin Free Library Commission at Madison.
Within the past three months more than 40,000 volumes have been shipped to eager readers living in all parts of the state. More than seven hundred communities received collection of books-books of all kinds-for old and young, popular books of fiction, books of history, travel, biography, as well as practical books on farming or business. In some communities these collections are placed in the village post-office, the barber shop the bank, a store, or in a rural school or cheese factory, wherever the people may have access to them. Such collections are loaned without charge providing the community will pay the freight and return them at the end of six months.
More than 2,500 individuals have received books by parcel post since the first of October. These borrowers have simply written a letter asking for certain books and the books have been sent by prepaid parcel post for a three weeks loan, at the end of which time the borrowers return the books, paying return postage. This opportunity to borrow books free of charge is open to all citizens of Wisconsin, by addressing the Traveling Library Department at Madison
