Make Way For the Respectable Party.
If the Democratic leaders have any serious intention of wiping out the protective system, they had better do what they are going to do this winter. They will never have another chance. They are certain to lose the lower branch of congress next fall, even if they can retain the senate, which is doubtful. So, if they are wise, they will act now "while it is called today." They are beat anyhow and might as well be hung for an old sheep as a lamb. While in retirement they can leisurely watch the working out of the free trade experiment and see if their contention holds good that it is best for the country. If it ruins everything, as the Republicans predict, the Demmies will have the grim satisfaction of old Samson--that in pulling down the pillars of the temple they have killed the other fellows as well as themselves. Meantime a respectable party will have taken charge of things to see what can be saved from the wreck caused by 40 years of Republicanism and four of its twin brother.--Nonconformist.
