"Independent" Federation Beaten At Election In Aircraft Plant
A new anti-labor outfit-the self-styled "Federated Independent Texas Unions"—met its Waterloo this week at the big Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation's plant in Fort Worth, Tex.
For several years the International Association of Machinists has been bargaining agency at the plant, but collective bargaining with the local management has been consistently stormy.
When a strike occurred earlier this year, a "company union" suddenly sprouted at the plant. It affiliated with the new Federation of "phony independents." After the strike was settled, the independent" went on to challenge the Machinists' majority representation.
While the I. A. M. could have brought Wagner Act charges against the company for sponsoring a "dummy" union, it decided instead in favor of a showdown at the ballot box. That election was held this week under National Labor Relations Board auspices and the I. A. M. came out on top by the sweeping majority of 2,883 to 1,874.
