POETRY.

THE GRUMBLERS.

OR, SOME OF THE SAD EFFECTS OF THE PRESENT ADMINISTRATION

To be said or sung, as may be most convenient.

Ah me how bad the times are growing
All, all, is to destruction going.
All kinds of evil threat the nation
The devil take the Administration!

The public debt is fast redeeming.
(O one sample of their pretty scheming
And this by wise and prudent measures.
And careful husbanding of treasures
At foreign courts our rights respected
Our foreign commerce well protected,
At home, why see the fools contriving
To keep domestic matters thriving.
Fair Freedom's reign is widely extending.
All blessings on her course attending
While Science, every where progressing,
Displays her wonders past expressing

These are a few, among the wonders
Of these rare getters up of blunders
Who seem to feel a queer ambition
To better all, and each condition
Now who can wonder folks are grumbling.
A course like this, can ne'er be pleasing
All men of sense must be disgusted,
To see such ninny-hampers trusted

N. patriot: No this ne'er will answer,
Adams no more must be our man, all.
Too tame to oust him we dare not matter.
And get a man of storm and blaster
We want a man of fire and fury.
Who'll hang men without judge or jury
Who makes his will his standard or law,
And does just what may suit his pleasure.

Rouse, rouse all hands, nor think it cruel
To use thus such a war gruel.
Like Aesop's frogs, keep up your croaking,
This good king log, is most provoking
This man of great negotiation,
Goes on—he means to rule the nation,
Choose one whose elegy surpasses,-
As brandy does cornstalk molasses.

When we have got our hickory king up.
Then, halcyon days again may spring up:
When old John's brick house comes tumbling.
Then, we perhaps may cease our grumbling.
