"When I embarked from America it was not without some reluctance; but I never expected to find this country in such a deplorable situation;—not on account of the suspension of every commercial intercourse, but on account of the re-organization of Jacobinism of those monsters of iniquity who have crawled out again of their caverns, and who are spreading terror, desolation and civil war throughout the country. Bordeaux, that once flourishing and opulent city, and which had heretofore escaped every convulsion, has since my arrival been the object of their bloody rage. Numbers of armless and peaceable citizens having been pursued, fired upon and shot by them in different parts of the town.
"It would become too painful a task for me, was I to give you a sketch of the intricate prospects which this country in particular presents, and when contrasting the convulsed state of Europe generally with the tranquility which we enjoy in America, it seems to me that I came from a terrestrial paradise, into a wilderness, where every moment is to me a moment of regret and repentance. The worst is that I find myself obliged to remain here and to wait the development of further events."
