What is this article about?

A gentleman from Carrickfergus has initiated a whale fishery at St. John's Point in County Donegal, Ireland, killing enough whales to supply several counties with oil and bone comparable to foreign imports. Vast numbers of whales appear seasonally in local bays, offering potential to supply Ireland and Great Britain more cheaply than Dutch Greenland sources, amid economic difficulties.

Merged-components note: Continuation of the Dublin report on whale fishery across pages; relabeled to foreign_news as it concerns Ireland, foreign to the American context.

Full Text

Dublin, Oct. 22. We have Advice from the County of Donegal, that a Gentleman from Carrickfergus, has set on Foot a Whale Fishery, at a Place called St. John's Point, in that County, and that he has already kill'd Fish sufficient to supply several Counties with Oil and Bone.

as good as any we pay Money for to Foreigners; and we are likewise informed, that there are vast Numbers of large Whales that appear in most of the Bays of that Country at certain times every Season; which lays a heavy Charge of Stupidity and Indolence upon us, that this has never been discovered or attempted before; but we hope this Gentleman has begun in a good Time, in the midst of our Difficulties and Disbursements abroad, to put us in a Way to save and gain many Thousand Pounds a Year; for, if the above be Matter of Fact, as we are well assured it is, we may not only supply ourselves, but Great-Britain, at an easier Rate than the Dutch can do from Greenland.
