Mr. and Mrs. James D. Porter of Santa Rosa, California, are taking the kind of vacation most people just dream about. Semi-retired, they left their California home just to travel where they want to go in their specially built trailer, which according to Mr. Porter, has everything, including built-in tanks for hot and cold water, a small boat and all the conveniences of a city home.
Enroute to Nome, which they have always wanted to visit, they stopped at Kerry Lake in the Crooked River country, which is on the Hart Highway in Canada. They found a place they liked so well that they bought 16,000 acres in one place and 40 acres in another place where they plan to put up a lodge and spend part of every year.
Although the Porters could not come all the way to Nome in their car, they are visiting as much of the territory as they can by air and bus.
Of all the places they have been in Alaska, they state that they like Nome the best because of its sincere friendliness. "Some of the bigger places in Alaska," Mr. Porter stated, "are reaching the stage of development where they haven't time to even be courteous to visitors."
By the end of 1951 the Porters will have visited in all the 48 states.
