GOING TO CHINATOWN.—Wellington Bowen is an exceedingly modest and moral young man, and drives stage for Billy Wilson on the Aurora road. Dr. Ah Kee, a botanical physician of Confucian descent, is a resident of what is known as Chinatown, in this city, and among other nostrums, prepares powders to whiten ladies' faces. This fact, and the excellent quality of Ah Kee's powders, becoming known abroad, he sells largely to the ladies in distant towns and in the cow counties. The other day Bowen reined up his team in front of a large hotel in a neighboring town. On the porch stood a number of gentlemen, while the balcony was lined with ladies. Directly a young lady stepped up to the front of the porch and said: "Mr. Bowen, do you ever go to Chinatown?" The reins slackened, the men haw-hawed, the ladies tee-hee'd, and Bowen was seized with scarlet fever. In a moment, however, he recovered his senses, and, thinking to be as frank (not to say bold) as the young lady, he replied: "Yes; I go there nearly every night, when I am in Carson!" "Then," said the young lady, casting furtive and inquiring glances at the laughing crowd, "I wish you would get me four bits' worth of that powder from Dr. Ah Kee." People living a mile this side of the town thought "Bowen must have been behind time—he drove so all-fired fast."
