DANGEROUS ASSAULT.—On Thursday night a man named Peter Straub, residing in Meserole street, near Union avenue, was severely beaten by a party of men in a store at the corner of Whipple street and Flushing avenue. It appears that Straub went into the store and asked the party inside to drink. There were seven inside and five drank. Straub went around to see why the others did not drink, was struck in the head with a stone in the hands of one of the boys who fled into a building near the corner. Straub pursued, when the door was closed against him, and a man named Fenton Hebling caught hold of Straub, and both fell to the sidewalk. At the same time Peter Schaeffer came up and clenched Straub and inflicted several blows upon his body with a chisel. Straub was conveyed to his home, where he lies in a very critical condition. He has three wounds upon his head and face, evidently inflicted with some sharp instrument. He has also wounds upon his body which may cause serious effects. Peter Schaeffer and John Fenton were arrested, and held to await the result of the injuries to Straub.

Yesterday morning the Coroner was notified to hold an ante-mortem examination, but it was not found necessary, as the injured man was better. He will probably recover from his injuries, and last evening was in a fair way of recovery.
