The Democratic Candidates Of Summit County
Sketches of the Nominees For Local Offices-- All Are First Class Men.
Individually and collectively the Democratic ticket in Summit county this fall presents a strong array of names. Summit county is normally Republican, but Democratic candidates have been elected in the past and there is a bright prospect that they will be elected this fall. It behooves every loyal Democrat to go to the polls. The vote this fall may be very light. Let not the Democratic candidates lose because of a stay-at-home vote.
Following are sketches of the candidates and the record of each man is open not only to inspection but to careful scrutiny:
FOR REPRESENTATIVES There has been no time within the history of Summit county when the need of careful, competent and courageous legislators has been so apparent as at this time. The Democrats, when they selected ex-Representative C. N. Russell, now Mayor of Cuyahoga Falls, to make a second contest for the right to be one of Summits representatives did so in recognition of his able services during his former term, Popular while representing his constituency in the Legislature during the term of '98, he has continued to grow in popularity, as attested by his selection as Mayor of his home town.
Mayor Russell is 45 years old and with his wife lives in a cozy home in Harrison st., Cuyahoga Falls. He was born at Council Bluffs, Ia., and there received his earlier education. Leaving there he came to Ravenna, where for five years he was a deputy sheriff of Portage county. He came to Cuyahoga Falls in 1892, and was elected Mayor of the village in the spring of 1900.
Mayor Russell was admitted to the Summit County Bar four years ago.
JOHN A. WINTRODE.
There are few young men in Akron who are known better than John A. Wintrode, one of the Democratic candidates for Representative. He has been prominently identified with all the local labor organizations-not as an extremist or agitator, but representative of conservative and reasonable methods of obtaining harmony between labor and capital in a manner conserving the best interests of both. He was born Nov. 21, 1869, at West Middleburg, O., his parents being Jacob J. and Phoebe Wintrode. His education was obtained in the Common schools at West Middleburg, after which he studied pharmacy for a year.
Leaving Middleburg he went to Bellefontaine, where he learned the printing trade. From Bellefontaine, he went to Toledo; from there he went to Lima, and later worked in Indianapolis. Coming to Akron in 1891, he has lived here ever since, having been employed on the daily newspapers.
At present he is a Linotype operator with the Democrat. Since coming to Akron, Mr. Wintrode has at various times been chairman of the Executive Committee of the Typographical union; president of the Central Labor Union for seven terms, and is at present organizer for the American Federation of Labor. Mr. Wintrode was married April 27, 1890 to Miss Estelle Tucker, of Spring Hills, O., and has two children. Their home is at 111 N. Walnut st. Mr. Wintrode has given his pledge to the people of Akron and Summit county that he will do his utmost to assist in obtaining for them the reforms for which they have been asking, and whose need is so great.
FOR PROSECUTING ATTORNEY, Samuel G. Rogers has long been known to Summit county people as an exceptionally able attorney. He was prosecuting attorney six years ago, and did not, when in that office, require the aid of an assistant every time a case of more than passing consequence developed. If Summit county does not want to pay two prosecuting attorneys to do the work that one should do, Mr. Rogers should by all means, be elected. Mr. Rogers was chairman of the Democratic County Executive Committee the past year and did excellent work. He was born in Akron 36 years ago and obtained his education chiefly in the Akron Public schools. He worked in the Buckeye foundry to help pay his way in securing an education, and studied law with Marvin & Atterholt. He graduated from the Cincinnati Law school.
Early in his career he was elected prosecuting attorney. That was in 1892 and his term of three years stands out as one of the best in the history of Summit county. Mr. Rogers is married and has a pleasant home at 434 East Buchtel ave.
FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER. Charles W. Barnes, Democratic candidate for county commissioner was born in Norton township in 1845.
Twenty-three years ago he bought farm in the south-east corner of Copley township and there he has since resided. Mr. Barnes is an excellent business man and has always taken a keen interest in affairs of the county He is best known as a breeder of fine stock, his farm being devoted to that enterprise. Mr. Barnes was educated in the Common schools and Baldwin University at Berea and his educational qualifications for the office of commissioner are far above the average.
Mr. Barnes believes in economy in public affairs and is a safe man for the county commissioner's office in all respects. As it is now the Board of Commissioners is made up exclusively of Republicans.
By business men everywhere it is conceded that the public interests demand that the administration should not be so one-sided.
Mr. Barnes is married and his home in Copley is among the pleasantest in the county.
FOR COUNTY SURVEYOR. Hon. T. Dwight Paul, the nominee of the Democratic party for county surveyor, has long been well and favorably known to Summit county people. He is one of the best civil engineers in Ohio and his long, successful experience makes it superfluous to speak further of his qualifications. Mr. Paul especially distinguished himself as a member of the City Council until the past year, always standing for the public's interests and for economy in government. Mr. Paul was at one time a member of the State Board of Public Works, and as such was able and competent. His home is at 119 Turner st., Akron.
FOR AUDITOR. Dr. F. J. Bauer of Mogadore, the Democratic candidate for auditor, although a resident of that village for 24 years, has lived in Summit county but 16 years. During his earlier residence in the town he lived on the Portage county side. Now he is on the Summit county side, and is representing that part of town in the village council. Dr. Bauer is 47 years of age He was born at Suffield, Portage county. and is a son of Jacob and Christiana Bauer. His earlier education was obtained in the common schools,, after which his medical training was obtained at the Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati, and the college of Physicians and Surgeons, Cleveland, He has been a life-long Democrat, and has never before aspired to a county office. From '86 to '89 he held the office of Justice of the Peace at Mogadore. He is married and has two children. Dr. Bauer is a capable man for the position to which he aspires. He has studied closely the affairs of Summit county, and knows well the requirements of her auditor.
FOR INFIRMARY DIRECTOR, The Democratic candidate for Infirmary director, John Spellman, of Northampton, has been a resident of that township since childhood. He was born in Randolph Portage county, 46 years ago. He is a successful business-like farmer, and well qualified for the duties of Infirmary director. Added to his other qualifications, is that he speaks German fluently. Also, he is an advocate of economy in public affairs. Mr. Spellman adds strength to the ticket, notwithstanding that he is a candidate for a minor office. There can be no mistake in voting for him and for all the Democratic ticket.
