The three youths who used a gun in attempting to escape from Deputy Sheriff Fred Elliott while he was taking them from Calexico to the Imperial county jail late Sunday, face imprisonment on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and grand theft of an automobile. Both charges are felonies.
Judge John E. Simpson of El Centro justice court held them to answer in superior court after a preliminary hearing conducted Wednesday morning. He set the bail at $1,000 each.
James W. Jones, 18, Richard Priest, 18, and Lewis Crandall, 19, maintained silence in court. Questioning on the part of District Attorney Elmer Heald revealed that Crandall had hidden nine-shooter in his boot-top after he was stopped by inspectors at Mexicali. The gun later was transferred to Jones, who hid it in his shirt, the evidence revealed.
While en route to El Centro, Jones thrust the pistol in Elliott's side and said, "Take it easy," Elliott testified in court. The deputy jammed on the brakes and seized the gun.
