DISTRESSING.
The torrent of rain, which fell during the night of Thursday last has been productive of much individual distress and public inconvenience. The fresh in the river rose with great rapidity during the night, and by day break had swept all the lumber from the wharves, and drove most of the vessels from their fastenings; one of which was sunk with 150 barrels of tar on board, and several others much injured. But the greatest individual loss, as well as public inconvenience, with which we are yet acquainted, is the destruction of the bridge at Falmouth, the property of Robert Dunbar, esq. which gave way about 11 o'clock yesterday. The fresh was still rising at 2 o'clock P. M. yesterday.
The communication both North and South is interrupted, and we think it probable that the mails will not be able to pass and repass before Monday, particularly to the North.
