STEPPED UP: CZECHS
MAKE MORE ARRESTS

(By The Associated Press)

The Communist government of Czechoslovakia stepped up its feud with the Roman Catholic Church today. In the largely Roman Catholic province of Moravia numerous clergy and prominent laymen were reported arrested.

According to one source Archbishop Joseph Matocha of Moravia's second city, Olomouc, is under police surveillance. A police guard was reported around the palace of Archbishop Josef Beran in Prague.

Churchmen describe the events as a government move to exterminate the hierarchy in Czechoslovakia and cut off all ties with the Vatican. The government has set up a "Catholic Action" organization which Archbishop Beran has denounced.

The Vatican decreed yesterday that those voluntarily joining the government-sponsored "Catholic Action" group would be excommunicated.
