Was Annoyed in Hotels
NEW YORK, Feb. 1.—Persecution by Albert Gallatin Wheeler, Jr. or his wealthy family in an effort to place her in a compromising situation, is the story of the life of Mrs. Claudia Parrott Wheeler during the last four years according to papers filed by her yesterday in the supreme court. The younger Mr. Wheeler is seeking a divorce, having named a Walter N. Green as co-respondent.
Mrs. Wheeler, who ten years ago charmed New York audiences with her voice and beauty, flatly denies the charges made against her. She has long asserted that Albert Gallatin Wheeler, her father-in-law who was one of the organizers of the Chicago traction system, has endeavored to alienate her husband from her. In her affidavit she now says that her husband or his family "hired Walter N. Green to make charges of wrong doing against me in my husband's divorce action."
Mrs. Wheeler obtained a decree of separation four years ago. Her husband recently alleged in his divorce action that she and Mr. Green were guilty of misconduct in hotels at Brookline, Mass., Boston, New York and London. She asserts that she has never entered the hotels in which she is said to have been with Green.
Tells Strange Story,
Mrs. Wheeler tells an unusual story in her affidavits: "I am now living with Mrs. J. Morris at No. 805 West 113th street," she says. "I married Mr. Wheeler when I was twenty-one in March 1905. I implored him at the time not to insist on his proposal of marriage, as I expected that I had a career before me as my parents had spent a great deal of money in developing my voice. Mr. Wheeler continued his proposals until finally with the consent of his parents and of my parents we were married."
"His love changed at length" according to her story, until "from a man who had all the marks of a gentleman he turned out to be almost fiendish in his physical abuse of me. He made many inducements for me to go out with others, which I refused unless he accompanied me."
"I charge that this divorce action is in line with the four years of effort on the part of my husband to try to fasten some wrongdoing on me," she continued. "I have been followed all the time. I have had to appeal to hotel managers and hotel detectives (including those at the McAlpin and the Waldorf) to put an end to the attempted liberties that men tried to take in getting acquainted with me."
Mrs. Wheeler asks that the conspiracy which she alleged between her husband and Mr. Green, be made the subject of a court investigation.
