MOUNTAIN CORRESPONDENCE

Gibsonville, Dec. 6, 1859.

Editor Democrat—Dear Sir: An awful

disgraceful fracas, which will unquestionably

prove fatal to one of the participants, just

transpired at Whiskey Diggings, about two

miles north of this place, the particulars of

which are as follows: Pat Redden and Nat

McLean were playing cards together in

Band's Saloon, when a difficulty arose be-

tween them, words of a hostile character

passed; threats of a murderous purport were

made, when McLean ended the controversy

by drawing a dirk and stabbing Redden in

the abdomen. The death dealing instrument

entered a line or two above the navel, took

an upward course, and penetrated the stom-

ach. At the present writing it has not been

ascertained to what extent the vital organs

have been wounded, but the presumption is

that he cannot survive. Another sad com-

mentary on the prostituting practice of habit-

ual card playing.

I was called upon, some three or four days

since, to Richmond Hill, Plumas county, in

attendance upon a young man by the name

of George Davis, who had just broken his

thigh bone, about midway between the tro-

chanter and patella. The accident occurred

in the following manner: He was standing

upon his knees in a tunnel digging, when a

cave of dirt took place, covering him nearly

up, and causing the accident in question. The

fracture was comminuted, but fortunately

not compound.

Since my last, we have had beautiful wea-

ther, with the exception of rather too much

"fair." For several days there has scarcely

been a floating cloud visible: but oh! how

cold. The mercury has certainly been away

down below —, well, no matter where.

Yours, in brief,

W. WELLINGTON. C.
