Sept. 19
Last Friday the Honourable Superior Court ended their sessions in this county—during the term Abner Mack and Stephen Kidder, both transient persons, were convicted of burglary, in breaking open a store in East Hadham. Mack was sentenced to be whipped forty stripes, to be confined three years to hard labour and pay the costs of his conviction; and Kidder to the same punishment, except the term of confinement, which was limited to two years, in consequence of some circumstances which rendered him not so criminal as his companion. Though these persons were not more than 21 years of age, yet they appeared to be adepts in villainy—after they broke open the store, they defrauded each other in the distribution of their plunder; and when they were brought out to receive punishment, they bore the discipline of the rabble with uncommon fortitude. Mack received his punishment first, and while Kidder was experiencing the reward of his dexterity, he made a most fervent prayer, which so attracted the attention of the bystanders, that Mack had an opportunity to steal a handkerchief from his suffering companion.
