Dr. Milner L. Darnell has come to the Interdenominational Theological Center this week from his four-year pastorate at Miles Chapel AME Church, Little Rock, Ark. Dr. Darnell was the unanimous choice of the College of Bishops of the CME Church as Director of Phillips School of Theology, one of the four cooperating institutions in the new Center.
Dr. Darnell was a leading religious and civic leader in Little Rock.
Dr. Darnell has been selected as a fraternal delegate to the AME General Conference of 1960.
Growing up in the South, in Arkansas and Alabama, Reverend Darnell received his BA from Paine College, his BD from Gammon in 1935. He has studied further at Hammond Theological Seminary, Springfield, Ohio and Fisk University. He has been awarded honorary degrees from Mississippi Industrial, Holly Springs and Lane College, Jackson, Tenn. He served as army chaplain in World War II in the South Pacific and was discharged with rank of Major.
Dr. Darnell brings to his new post 25 years of experience in the pastorate, as the college pastor of Texas College, Tyler, Texas and also in Dallas, Texas and Springfield, Ohio.
As Director of Phillips School of Theology in the Center, Dr. Darnell will teach courses in denominational policy, history and doctrine; will be in the field in the CME churches and schools in promotion and recruiting activities and will be Director of CME students at the Center.
Dr. Darnell's two children were born on the Gammon campus when he was a student. The surviving one, Emma Jane, is now a law student at Howard University, having graduated at Fisk and received her M degree from Columbia. Mrs. Darnell, a graduate dietician from West Virginia State and Iowa State College is a dietician on the staff of the Missouri Pacific Hospital, Little Rock and will join her husband later.
