Extract of a letter from a subscriber near Liberty, in Frederick county

"The meeting in Liberty, on Saturday [to nominate a congressional candidate] was numerous and respectable. Some few influential men from a distance, who could not attend, authorised their neighbours to act for them, previously declaring in favor of the popular candidate. Dr. Sappington was called to the chair, and Dennis Howard was requested to act as secretary. A committee was immediately appointed to frame resolutions, expressive of the object of the meeting, who after retiring for a few minutes, reported the resolutions as published in the Herald nominating Mr. Hanson] which were adopted without a dissenting voice. The chairman of the committee introduced the resolutions, with a concise and very impressive speech. He informed the meeting, that he had known the favorite candidate from boyhood--spoke of his early promise of future usefulness--stated that he had been a main pillar in support of federalism in Maryland, and had hazarded as much as any man in the union in support of federalism, always manifesting a zeal and firmness almost unequalled--that his knowledge of general politics was surpassed by few, whilst the utmost reliance might be placed upon him in all situations, &c. &c.-- Among the federalists throughout the Frederick district, I know not one dissenter, and the general understanding is, that a like unanimity pervades the mass of federalists in good old Montgomery. The address sent on to Rockville to Mr. Hanson, soliciting him to serve, was signed by several democrats in Tancytown, who have become heartily sick of non-intercourses and embargoes, and kick up their heels and run at the very mention of war."
