These Districts, at present, are represented by War-Hawks.
Seaver, Widgery, Cutts, Turner, and Green, advocates of War, are not re-elected.
FROM BATH.
Be it remembered, to the honor of the citizens of BATH, that Benjamin Ames, the democratic candidate, for Congress, obtained only 24 votes, out of 320—and that he did not receive one half that were cast for men of his own party—this shews that there are independent democrats who prefer measures to men and who will never sacrifice their country to party spirit, and to the honor of the electors of the third eastern district be it also remembered that SAMUEL DAVIS, Esq, is elected by several hundred majority.—at this unexpected, important event, every honest American must rejoice.
LINCOLN.
Queries.—Did not the Argus man receive the returns of the Representative Election from a number of Towns in this district, before his paper went to the Press? If he did, was it not his duty to publish them for the information of the public? If not was he not a great Ignoramus for not knowing what was well known to a most every man in Portland?—If he has suspended himself on the horns of a Dilemma who fault is it?
The Madisonians in this town rendered desperate by the loss of their war Candidates, are redoubling their exertions to secure such Electors as will give their votes for Mr. MADISON & WAR, These men care not how much the people suffer or what taxes are imposed if they can retain their offices and bask in Executive favor. We understand a meeting was holden on Thursday last, in this town, and that among other measures, a Circular was adopted, calculated to impose, deceive and influence the Electors in this District in favor of the Madisonian ticket, headed by John Woodman, But we trust that the good sense of the Electors of this District is not to be controuled by the fears of office holders or Office seekers. The citizens of the United States have now a glorious opportunity to lay aside party names and party prejudices and unite on American ground in the support of the Union and Peace Ticket who will support the election of the Hon. Mr. CLINTON, for President of the United States, whose object will be to restore to the country an honorable Peace, and Free Trade. The following is a copy of the circular letter alluded to. The reader, after perusing it, will be best qualified to judge whether the method there adopted of calling opprobrious names, is such as a good cause would require for its support.
"WHIG PATRIOTISM."
"To
YOU are requested by the sacred ties which bind you to your Country, to give your Vote on the 12th day of November for the Whig Ticket. with the Hon JOHN WOODMAN, an old, tried, faithful, public servant at the head. Will you not fight a British faction with your votes, where no blood can be spilt? while your brethren in arms, and in your ships are sacrificing their lives? Will you remain at home and let the British conquer you in your TOWN MEETINGS?—forbid it Patriotism! and may he who rules the destinies of nations forbid it! Is ONE DAY too much to spend for your Country, and your rights, and your children? No! Then arise, and in holy indignation swear, YOUR COUNTRY SHALL BE FREE—No British Faction shall any longer pollute the soil enriched by the blood of your Fathers and Brothers—Degrade not your Country, degrade not yourself, but remember, you are an American, and help preserve your Country—
"YOUR COUNTRY CALLS YOU."
