"As I wrote you a few days since, the President at first determined not to return to this city until some time in the month of September next--Mr. Jackson's probable arrival to the contrary notwithstanding; and he so informed the Secretaries of state and the Treasury. European official dispatches have, however, since poured in upon us very copiously through your city, Annapolis, &c. and it is generally understood that he has conformed to the opinion of the heads of departments, or some of them, by returning to the seat of government; which he has done this evening at 6 o'clock.…This is unquestionably as the taken without any immediate or particular view to the arrival or reception of Mr. Jackson. The generally interesting and critical state of our affairs, according to the recent advices from all the belligerents has led to it.
His family is not with him, and probably he will not remain long."
"All the members of the cabinet are now here, the Attorney general, I believe, excepted."
"Gen. Turreau, the French minister, is also on the ground."
"Mr. Sumpter, the American Minister to the court of the Brazils, is here receiving his instructions, preparatory to his departure on his mission. Jackson is not yet arrived. Should any thing particularly interesting occur, I shall endeavor to advise you of it the moment it transpires. The official advices from France are doubtless of an unsatisfactory nature."....Pub.
