GLADE MILL, May 1st, 1867.
C. E. Anderson, Esq.,—Editor Citizen:—A terrible affair occurred here on the 30th instant. Johnston Williamson, an old and respectable citizen of Middlesex township, was found hanging dead in the woods a short distance from his own house. An inquest was held on the body by Esquire Barclay, who summoned a jury of the neighbors of the deceased, to inquire into the cause of the rash act, who examined several witnesses in regard to the case. It appeared from the evidence that deceased had been unwell for some time previous to the rash act, and had been in a melancholy state of mind for some time, and on the day of his death appeared as well as usual, and ate his dinner with his family as usual at half past eleven o'clock; after which he procured a small piece of rope, and a check line, and proceeded to the woods, where there was a lodged tree which had fallen and lodged at an angle of about 35 degrees, where he had deliberately attached the line to the tree, with the rope around his neck, to which he fastened one end of the line and then swung off, falling about three feet.
He was found about five minutes past twelve o'clock by George Potts, who happened to be passing that way. Deceased was fifty-four years of age, and was in good circumstances.
He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his untimely end. His remains were followed to the grave on Wednesday, May 1st, by a large train of sympathizing friends.
