The award of the International Peace Prize of the World Council of Peace to Dr. W. E B Du Bois was a highlight of the National Committee Meeting of the American Peace Crusade held on Sunday. November 15th. at the Hotel Cornish Arms in New York City.
Dr Du Bois, Honorary Co-Chairman of the American Peace Crusade. was one of six international prize winners who were honored by the World Council of Peace for their creative work in the letters. arts or sciences making an outstanding contribution to world peace and friendship between the people. Each prize consists of a gold medal, a diploma and a cash award of about $6500
The presentation of the gold medal and the diploma was made by Dr Rober Moss Lovett, Professor Emeritus of Chicago University and former Secretary of the Virgin Islands.
In receiving the award for her husband. Mrs. Shirley Graham Du Bois, noted author. said: This honor to my husband honors too his fellow workers for peace in America The prize expresses the deep appreciation of the peace-loving people of other countries for the efforts for peace being made here"
The National Committee Meeting attended by 75 delegates from such widely separated areas as Georgia Massachusetts, Michigan and Maryland. heard a report from Mr Thomas Richardson, former chairman of the Anti-Discrimination Com- mittee of the United Public Workers. who is National Co-Director of the Crusade.
In his report, Mr. Richardson declared R Akv HRR HA HERRT decried the fact that the United States is being represented today in thie United Nations by a person "whorefuses to understand the yearnings and aspirations of colored peoples at home and throughout the world for full freedom and human dignity
He went on to say: As long as Mr Byrnes represents our government at the United Nations. we will present to the world a symbol of neither tolerance. reason or com- passion - all so essential for the achievement of understanding and peace."
A National Referendum for peace through negotiations was launched at the meeting. An Appeal to the American People was adopted, calling upon all organizations and individuals 'to press in every way for negotiations to assure peace."
The Appeal pointed out that America must have peace in order to have jobs, security and a happy future for children and youth.
