LOS ANGELES, Sept. 14.—Fifteen lettermen, plus a likely bunch of frosh material will report to coach William H. "Bill" Spaulding, gridiron mentor at University of California at Los Angeles, when he calls the roll for the season's first football workout at Moore Field tomorrow.
Overconfidence will be the problem that Spaulding will have to battle this fall, as information has been widely circulated that the U. C. L. A. Bruins will be the outstanding obstacle in the path of championship aspirations of other teams in the southern conference.
Spaulding's team should outweigh every opponent by a considerable margin. From tackle to tackle the line will average over 190 pounds, with the ends but little lighter. The backfield should average 162 pounds.
Captain Scribner, will be among the favorites for the quarterback billet with Edward Soloman, Jerry Russon and Tom Wilcox as understudies.
Joe Fleming, who scored 105 points in the conference last year, will be out to repeat at halfback position, and will be one of the ball carriers that opposing teams will have to stop to minimize the Bruin offensive. Bert La Bucheries will probably be his running mate, although he will be pressed by Milo Olson and Cliff Simpson.
Earl "Buffalo" Fields, shifted from the line to fullback, will be the choice for the latter spot.
Spaulding has in Julius Beck, Robert Henderson and Charles Barta, three ends who won letters last year, with Robert Rasmus, former frosh, seeking a wing position. Rasmus punting ability will make him a hard man to beat.
Lettermen who are candidates for guard and tackle post are Elwin Davis, Elvin Peterson, Jacob Singer and Stanley Gould, with Carl Brown, 170-pounder, stepping up from the freshman ranks.
Herman "Tiny" Epstein, has 220 pounds of argument favoring him for the call at center.
The U. C. L. A. program opens on Sept. 24, when the Santa Barbara Teachers College eleven opposes the Bruins at Moore Field here. Fresno State comes the following week with the Bruins opening their southern conference schedule against the Whittier Poets on Oct. 5.
