We hear 14 sail of vessels were drove ashore at Cape Nicholas Mole in the late Hurricane.
We hear several Whalemen and Fishermen have been lost in the same gales of wind.
A Whaling vessel, arrived at Dartmouth, we are told, on the 24th of last month, met the Whaling sloop Pluto, belonging to Cushnet, John Winslow, late master, in lat. 41 & half, long. 62, bottom upwards. They took out 40 barrels of oil, with the Captain's bed and chest. Same day met the wreck of the whaling sloop King of Prussia, Paul Rawson late master, belonging to Nantucket ; took out her papers, a small keg, with the Captain's name cut at large, & a powder horn, with the mate's name. The crews of both vessels are supposed to have perished.
About the same time, the above vessel met a schooner's foremast, with the foresail on it, double reefed ; also a Brig's main mast and mainsail.
Monday Octo. 19. We hear by Several vessels from Cape Nicholas Mole that the late Hurricane was not so severe there as at the Windward Islands, only 5 or 6 sail of vessels being drove ashore there, who all got off again.
Yesterday arrived Capt. Hammet from St. Croix ; his vessel was drove ashore there in the late Hurricane, but got off again without much damage.
Capt. Jarvis in a sloop belonging to this place was also drove ashore there, and the vessel lost.
We learn from Antigua that all the vessels in the different Harbours there, (with very few exceptions) were either sunk, overset, or driven ashore ; even that secure English harbour was not a sufficient asylum for the vessels there, his Majesty's ships Chatham, Active, Sea-Horse, and Falcon were driven from their moorings and suffered greatly, the former lost her foremast, and the others have not a mast standing.
At the small island of Saba, 182 houses were destroyed, and two ships, one a Guinea-man, are lost on the back of the island and all on board perished.
