Full Text
He has long had it in view to restore the Turks to their former hardiness, by banishing luxury of every kind. Not long since, while he was taking his round through the public places, he saw some ladies going to the bath in very magnificent dress when he caused their Sakka or veils to be cut in public, they being, he said, so large, that any one of them contained enough to make three. For any other man this would have been a very dangerous experiment in such a country as Turkey, where the men are so jealous of the honour of the women, and it certainly will by no means ingratiate him with the fair sex; but he is fourscore years of age, stands high in the Sultan's esteem, and the integrity of his views, and intrepidity of his heart, set him above all apprehensions to which ordinary men are subject.
