Full Text

Give the Devil His Due.—The Spanish, without reserve or qualification, are called by most of our contemporaries "a set of bloody wretches." If history be not a lie, the Spanish race has not been near so destructive, even as a conqueror, as the British people from whom we are mainly sprung. The conquests by Spain have never been so cruel and exterminating as those of Britain. Take Britain and her descendants in America, and India, and compare their treatment of native races with that of Spain wherever she has planted colonies. The British race has been unscrupulous and annihilated native races, while Spain has preserved every native race found in the path of her conquest. Where are the Indians of our portion of North America? Rooted out, almost utterly! How is it with the Indians found by Cortez and his successors, in Mexico and South America? Their descendants are in the ascendant in those countries to day. The Anglo Saxon is the carnivorous race, and not the Spanish. Spain has sins and misfortunes enough to bear without libelling her.
