Full Text

Our letters from Italy give a very dreadful account of the earthquake, which on the 5th of February took place in the island of Corfu. Part of the town is no more now than a heap of ruins, and the country about presents a melancholy scene. Above 100 people were buried under the ruins; and the number of those who were dangerously wounded, is countless. The Governor and his family had just time to reach the port, and get into a boat, before his house, a most noble edifice indeed, was completely swallowed up. It is further added, that this terrible scourge had been felt in the Isles of St. Maura and Argos; both of which have sustained very considerable damage.
