Twenty - Two Given Fines for Numbers

Twenty-two pleading guilty to lottery offenses Wednesday were given fines and suspended sentences by Superior Judge W. C. Worrill of Cuthbert, Ga., who is presiding this week over the special "gambling court" while indictments against two were nolle prossed and seven others were declared forfeit.

In each of the cases where the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, Judge Worrill fixed fines at $50 or six months in Fulton Tower and added twelve months suspended sentences.

In passing sentence Judge Worrill cautioned the defendants that if they were "even caught in a place where gambling was going on, the suspended sentences would be revoked."

Those fined, all of whom said they were first offenders, included: Charles Watts, O. I. Davis, Roosevelt English, Mrs. Ada Johnson, I. J. Bryant, Albert Smith, Lester Davis, Miss Lizzie Huguley, Otto McBride, Will Fambro, Levert Williams, Lester Smith, Mrs. Ella McCurdy, Fred Bryant, David Almond, Mrs. Sara Johnson, Buford Redding, George Taylor, Ernest Carter, Dewey Stephens, H. Culverson and Willie Johnson.

Indictments against Mrs. Corine Jones and Hosea Upshaw were nolle prossed by Judge Worrill after insufficient evidence was produced.

Bonds were declared forfeit in the cases of Eddie Williams, Robert Mosely, Lucius Carmichael, Robert Cook, Almond J. Carter, Richard Simmons and Jack Cherry.

The cases were prosecuted by Solicitor General John E. Boykin
