Aleck Herndon, (colored,) who was originally from Newberry, but had recently resided in Columbia, about ten days ago was arrested on a charge of burglary; he succeeded in making his escape from the officers of the law, and on Tuesday last, committed a rape, in a brutal manner, upon a colored girl, named Wilson. He tied the poor girl's clothing over her head, whipped her severely with switches, outraged her person, placed a heavy piece of timber across her neck, and then ran off. He was re-arrested and an order for commitment issued by Trial Justice Levy, (colored.) As the Sheriff's deputy was conveying the prisoner to jail, he again escaped, but was pursued by a posse, and refusing to stop when ordered, was fired upon and killed. An inquest was held by Trial Justice Levy, acting Coroner, and a verdict rendered by the jury that "the deceased came to his death by a pistol-shot fired by some person unknown, but one of the posse."
