Full Text

The Truckee Republican in giving an account of the late snow storm in the Sierra Nevadas, says: It was the fiercest and stormiest ever known on the Sierra Nevadas since the completion of the railroad. The wind blew a hurricane, the snow was light and dry, and the air was so filled with the storm-driven particles it was impossible, often-times, to see an object ten feet distant. The wind tore the branches from trees, started avalanches to rolling down the mountains, and howled, and shrieked, and raved like a thousand demons. It piled a drift thirty-five feet deep by the side of Cardwell's house at the Summit. It would find a crack or crevice in the sides of the snow-sheds, and soon the snow would be sifted into the height of six or eight feet across the track. In places the top of the snow sheds was bare; in places the posts and uprights groaned beneath a mass forty feet deep. The snow ploughs and engines worked incessantly. Hard work was never performed by railroad men. Relief train men and the snow plough crew had been out in the storm four nights and three days. During all this fight with the storm the men had scarcely two consecutive hours of sleep. The blockade was crushed through on Sunday morning, and soon after the sky cleared off and the wind lulled.
