Somebody passed out some bum information Friday and Saturday and the result was that there were twenty-five or thirty people who suffered in the recent tornado at the county commissioners' office today waiting for the commissioners to figure out some way to aid them from county funds, And the county commissioners knew absolutely nothing about it.
"I didn't know what was going on," said Henry McAfee, commissioner. "when these people began coming in. The commissioners had announced no meeting and had made no preparation for one. The matter had not even been discussed by us."
It was a disgruntled crowd of men and women that occupied the chairs and benches in the commissioners' office. They had driven in thru the heat and must drive home thru more heat. Their trip was for nothing.
Someone gave out the information that led to the printing of the notices and brought the people from the tornado district to Topeka. Mr. McAfee said today that the commissioners would investigate.
The notice printed by the Topeka papers was to the effect that the storm sufferers should meet with the commissioners today and that some agreement would be attempted whereby a part of their losses might be taken care of with 1917 taxes.
