The Mercury contains the following:
"APPOINTMENT OF SENATOR—We learn that
his Excellency Gov. Allston has appointed Col.
Arthur P. Hayne to fill the vacancy in the Senate
of the United States from South Carolina,
occasioned by the death of Hon. J. J. Evans.
The Courier endorses the compliment of the
Governor, and remarks:
"We regard this selection as a merited compliment,
gracefully bestowed on a high-toned
gentleman, a skillful officer and gallant soldier,
and a true-hearted Southron.
If the appointment says the Evening News,
had been a military instead of a civil one, the
compliment would have been more appropriate
to one, whom we regard as the type of a chivalrous,
and would no doubt have been more in
consonance with the sentiments and wishes of
the people. Such seems to have been the opinion
of the last Legislature, before whom Col.
Hayne was a candidate, at the time when Senator
Hammond was elected."
