COLLEGE OF MUSIC
Opened to a Large Crowd Last Evening by the Choral Club-The Various Branches and Their Instructors.

The Choral Club rehearsed in the Wilmington College of Music last evening, and held open house to its friends. About sixty members of the club were present with about 200 friends, who occupied seats along the sides of the large hall and in the waiting room and the manager's private office. The musical director of the club, Calvin B. Rhoads, was late in arriving and Frank Kane of the board of directors made up a short program. This included a solo, "The Skipper," by J. J. Jackson, which was encored; Mr. Jackson responded with "The Wolf." The club sang selections from the "Chimes of Normandy," and Mrs. Florence Fisher and W. R. Walters sang a duet. The regular rehearsal of the "Pirates of Penzance" was then held. After which the floor was cleared for dancing. The music was furnished by John Bernhardt, pianist; George Hyatt, violinist, and Fred Boulay, cornetist. While the dancing was in progress the waiting room and private office were crowded with friends of the club who enjoyed the bright scene over good cigars, or by chatting with the young ladies. One young lady of the club exhibited a tendency to the acquiring of cigars of which she captured a pocket full. A certain rising newspaper man assisted by the enlivening strains of a polacca quadrille became very light of foot, causing his journalistic friends some apprehension. During an intermission in the dancing, by special request, Will M. S. Brown gave a rendition of "La Reine," one of his own compositions. Mr. Brown has already published over 125 of his compositions, and his work shows a promising artistic conception. The festivities were continued until a late hour, and the managers of the College of Music is doubtless gratified at the success of its opening.

The college opened its regular course last evening, and is the result of several months work and planning by N. Dushane Cloward, the present proprietor and manager. The various branches of instruction are in competent hands. C. H. Lauer, assistant director of the Germania Orchestra, Philadelphia, will give instruction to advanced learners on the piano. Will S. M. Brown the young composer will have charge of the primary and intermediate classes.

In the vocal department Emil Gastel one of the most competent teachers of voice culture in Philadelphia, will instruct the advanced students, and N. Dushane Cloward and Professor C. B. Rhoads of this city will have charge of the primary and intermediate classes. C. C. Lauer of Philadelphia will give instruction on the violin.

In an address at the opening of the circular the "class lesson" is upheld as the best possible way to acquire skill and benefit from instruction. The terms of tuition are all moderate and reasonable. An interesting feature of the circular is the list of the church choirs, with their leaders and organists.

The term divisions are as follows: The first winter quarter began last evening November 19, and ends Saturday, January 26, 1889; regular winter quarter from Monday, January 28, 1889, to Saturday April 5, 1889; regular spring quarter from Monday, April 8, 1889 to Saturday June 14, 1889.
