Public Debt and Additional Tax of North Carolina under the New Constitution.
RALEIGH, March 21.—An article in the Sentinel of to-day, prepared from official data, estimates the public debt of North Carolina under the new Constitution on the 1st of July, 1869, at $19,476,500, the interest on which will be $851,000, which was ordered to be paid by the Convention.
The article shows that the additional tax upon the people of the State required to be raised next year under the new Constitution will be $295,000, both of which being added to the present taxes will swell the taxes for 1869 to $2,600,000. Heretofore State taxes have never exceeded $300,000.
