Some time ago, the Argus had a fling at CHARLES H. SHRINER because he was afflicted with lameness of one knee--just as, for years, it has sought to ridicule one of the Editors of this paper for his blindness of an eye.
Since this campaign opened, the Argus engineers have found a new fault with Maj. Shriner. They allege that, (when he was a high priest of the Democracy--in his days of youth and inexperience) he burned his hands (financially) by getting into the liquor business... a very unkind cut, that, against the Argus' party. The New York grocery captain, Rynders, says democracy and rum are twin brothers, and the potency of the latter is generally visible where that party has its largest majorities. But for lager beer and rum shops, it would be sadly behind in Williamsport and other localities.
It was not Republican liquor that made the riot in White Deer in 1860--nor does that party nor Maj. Shriner violate the laws relating to the "Democratic fluid" any more than their opponents. If you drive all the "liquor fellers" to our side, your party is done for, Mr. Argus.
As to pecuniary ability, Maj. Shriner may not equal his opponent. But, although starting in life without money, the Maj. could always pay his debts, and now can buy a dozen Argus offices into the bargain. If it were a crime ever to have been poor, or to have failed in business, or to have struggled against adversity, it can be forgiven by those who have had the same experience--and if the Copperhead abuse coerce all of that sort over to the Major, his majority will be overwhelming!
