Makes Address at National Celebration of Navy Day.
Washington.—Bitterly attacking those who have criticized the navy because of her recent misfortunes, Rear Admiral W. E. Eberle, chief of naval operations, made a strong plea for the understanding and support of the American people for the navy.
He spoke at the national celebration of Navy day, a day which, he declared, had been set aside to focus attention on America's naval line of defense.
Other speakers during the Navy day ceremonies at the national capital were Commander John Rodgers, hero of the Hawaiian flight; Commander C. E. Rosendahl, navigation officer of the ill-fated Shenandoah, and Lieut. Commander R. E. Byrd, commander of the naval air forces sent with the Donald MacMillan Arctic expedition. All their speeches were broadcast by radio.
"When misfortunes have fallen to the lot of the naval service and they fortunately have been few—there have been those who have bitterly criticized the navy in general, even before the cause had been determined or the responsibility had been fixed," Admiral Eberle stated.
"There have been those who, inspired by the insidious foreign propaganda of the world's enemies of law and order, have been anxious to forget the 150 years of honorable and distinguished service the navy has rendered to the country and have sought by every means in their power to undermine the interest of our citizens in their navy and to turn their enthusiasm for the navy into contempt and into hatred.
"But the navy is a great national service and it will carry on in spite of all."
