Full Text
The South Carolina legislature succeeded on Thursday in the choice of a U. S. senator for the six years' term commencing next March, and the choice fell upon James Chesnut Jr of Kershaw, the president of the state Senate. The election is a signal triumph of the "conservatives" or Hammond partisans, and senator Hammond now goes to Washington satisfied that South Carolina has endorsed his new position. The choice was effected on the 10th ballot, Mr Chesnut receiving 92 votes to 54 for ex-Gov James H. Adams, the "extremist" candidate. On the preceding (9th) ballot, the conservatives made their final rally on ex-Gov Manning, and finding that they could give him but 46 votes, they went over in a body to Mr Chesnut, who, from the start, had been supported by about twenty members.
