Carl Bervaldi, chairman of the Monroe county board of commissioners, announced today he will call a meeting Monday night at the county courthouse to organize a county defense council under the state defense organization set up by Gov Spessard L. Holland.
A defense council is being organized in every county in the state, Bervaldi said, in accordance with urgent instructions of Governor Holland, who considers that the country is facing an emergency which only the prompt cooperation of all classes of citizens can meet
Bervaldi has asked for representation from every patriotic, civic, religious and labor organization in Monroe county to take part in the defense program.
The new council it has been explained, will not be of a military nature, but will be formed to take charge of any emergency, such as fire, conservation of water supplies or traffic direction
Members of the committee will elect a chairman, vice chairman and secretary at the Monday night meeting Bervaldi explained that he is empowered to call the meeting but will not hold any office in the organization.
The meeting is scheduled for 8 o'clock.
