The cause of this is said to be the great increase in dairy farming, the milch cows in 1860 being 34 per cent. of the whole, while now they are 43 per cent.; but even the ratio of milch cows to population has greatly decreased in ten years, and the number of sheep is said to be less by one-half than ten years ago.
