The first requisites of a troubadour, of course, are that he be personable and that his voice be appealing. Lanny Ross fits the part exactly. Concerning the first, he is a six-foot, handsome chap with the grace born of his years of athletic competition at Yale. Concerning the second, thousands of women have written to him to say that, when he goes on the air, kitchen work stops. What greater tribute could there be to a modern troubadour who must, perforce, sing not to ladies on thrones but to ladies busy with the democratic tasks of the home?
It was, of course, an old custom for troubadours to play the guitar. Who ever heard of a serenade without one? So Lanny Ross plays the guitar. That is, however, only one of his hobbies. The others are the out-of-doors hobbies of healthy vigorous young men - fishing, boating, hiking.
Hitherto heard only at night, the Hellmann program has brought him to the notice of the nation - and the nation has taken him up.
